RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."
In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
