Jon Ruben confessed to 17 charges at the judicial center on the end of the week

A man who contaminated sweets with sedative and gave them to children at a youth camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual offenses against two children both between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight children and one adult became sick at the location in July.

The 76-year-old, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the judicial center on Friday.

However, he refused to admit a single sexual charge he was facing, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was held in detention before a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Treat game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, outlined the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She said his targets were under-privileged children who were attending a summer program which he operated.

The man engaged in a "candy game" with the youngsters, the prosecutor explained, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were settling down and request they to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the man had engaged in this activity with the young males "repeatedly", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She stated the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had suspicions in recently.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "Recently" his stepson had worries about what was going on, for good reason.

"They decided to have a look in the individual's items."

The prosecutor said objects including baby oil, petroleum jelly and injection devices were discovered, and his family member contacted the police about his concerns.

She stated the man proceeded to play the "sweet game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the next day.

"The police had not gone out by that time," she added.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was reviewing the police response of the situation.

The prosecutor stated the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement once more.

She stated the defendant then played the "candy game" in a space of five youngsters.
